CEDO 550 - Web 2.0 Tools

I agree with the article "Web 2.0 Use May Not Be Formative Assessment".  Using things like clickers should not be considered a tool for formative assessment.  Most survey tools or clickers just find out what students don't know.  They don't provide students with ways to monitor or diagnose their responses.  If Web 2.0 tools are going to be used as a formative assessment I think you would have to use a combination of tools.  Survey tools or clickers could help students figure out what they don't know.  Blogs or wikis can help them monitor their response by obtaining feedback from their peers or a teacher.  Things like Flikr or Twitter can help students better understand a concept.  Overall, I think there are a lot of great Web 2.0 tools available and they can be used to better enhance any lesson, but I am not sure there is one tool that is great to use for Formative Assessments.

  1. We are very much in a BETA stage of educational technology, and it is dominated by many one function tools that are good at some things and bad at others. Students will not always need a human to provide feedback, but currently they still do! Having them produce things to showcase learning is great, but they tend to be summative rather than formative.
