Creative Commons is something I still struggle with. I understand the purpose and the importance, but I am still learning the different types. I have worked on teaching my 6th graders that there are copyright laws and that you can't just use a picture without saying where you got it from, but it is definitely a new concept for them that they have a hard time grasping.
As far as CC in my personal life.... I hope to be able to better understand the different laws. I have used my own CC license to use on Flickr, but I would like to work to expand that out to other things I produce online.
Teaching "copy-left" to students can be a tough thing. I'd bet there are a lot of parents who wouldn't have any idea what you're talking about if they check their child's homework.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is hard to explain these things to students especially the younger ones. I have tried to with my 2nd grades in terms of copy with tests and it seems to sink it a bit, but telling them it is a law is hard when you don't always know the exact rules. This I struggle with too!
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same way as you do about understanding the different types of CC licenses. I really want to make sure my students, and myself, are using resources the correct way, but holy cow…it can be quite intimidating. I am so nervous that I am going to tell them something wrong and end up with someone, or myself, with a copyright issue.
ReplyDeleteYounger students often have trouble with grasping abstract concepts like Creative Commons, but through real-world demonstrations and making it part of their projects may be useful. I'll also be curious to see what kind of intellectual property rights exist when they become adults in 6 years....a lot can change by then!
