CEDO 555 - CC

Creative Commons is something I still struggle with.  I understand the purpose and the importance, but I am still learning the different types.   I have worked on teaching my 6th graders that there are copyright laws and that you can't just use a picture without saying where you got it from, but it is definitely a new concept for them that they have a hard time grasping.

As far as CC in my personal life.... I hope to be able to better understand the different laws.  I have used my own CC license to use on Flickr, but I would like to work to expand that out to other things I produce online.

  1. Teaching "copy-left" to students can be a tough thing. I'd bet there are a lot of parents who wouldn't have any idea what you're talking about if they check their child's homework.

  2. I think that it is hard to explain these things to students especially the younger ones. I have tried to with my 2nd grades in terms of copy with tests and it seems to sink it a bit, but telling them it is a law is hard when you don't always know the exact rules. This I struggle with too!

  3. I feel exactly the same way as you do about understanding the different types of CC licenses. I really want to make sure my students, and myself, are using resources the correct way, but holy cow…it can be quite intimidating. I am so nervous that I am going to tell them something wrong and end up with someone, or myself, with a copyright issue.

  4. Younger students often have trouble with grasping abstract concepts like Creative Commons, but through real-world demonstrations and making it part of their projects may be useful. I'll also be curious to see what kind of intellectual property rights exist when they become adults in 6 years....a lot can change by then!
